A New Groove

What do you do outside of work?
I’m actually a homebody—I like to stay in and listen to music. I like reading poetry, and I recently started cooking a lot.

What’s something you read recently that you’d recommend to people?
I recently discovered Penguin Classics, which are these little collections of works from writers that are sold for about $2. I recently read I Have More Souls Than One, a poetry collection by Fernando Pessoa. I like that he is able to display different personalities in his writing, in that he writes from the perspective of different aspects of himself.

How about music?
I used to listen to heavier stuff, but my taste has mellowed quite a bit recently. I’ve been putting on more psychedelic rock and jazz, and I’ve been listening to some bossa nova. I think of it as ’supermarket music’—you know, the music you’ll find playing over the speakers at a supermarket or a café. (laughs)

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to your younger self?
Don’t freak out! I’ve experienced so much change in my life just in the past decade, and I’d say that you’ve just got to stop sweating the little things, and trust that you’ll get to where you need to be, eventually.

An experience I’d like to have someday:
I want to visit Bhutan. It’s so beautiful, and I think it’d be a surreal experience to go somewhere so vastly different and withdraw completely from our city life, where we’re so connected and occupied all day.
