Describe your ideal weekend:
I’d usually start the mornings off with some weight training as it makes me feel more relaxed and productive for the weekend. I’d follow it up with some good Japanese food like a simple bowl of fresh bara chirashi don, and taking in the Singapore skyline by walking from the National Stadium to Marina Barrage and Bayfront.
What is one thing you wish Singapore had more of?
Subcultures and countercultures are rare and hard to find here, especially for foreigners like myself. I think there’s too much emphasis on fitting in with what’s hot right now rather than expressing what you’re passionate about, no matter how peripheral, and that’s something I miss from colourful and grimy old London.
What’s your favourite Singlish phrase?
‘Kancheong spider’!
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to your younger self?
Don’t be too quick to judge people too harshly; you often don’t know even half the facts. Be more kind towards qualities you perceive as flaws in others.
What’s one good habit you think people should form early in life?
Reading and critical thinking; these are essential qualities especially in a time when there’s so much misinformation readily available online. Every person must become an investigative journalist.
