What’s your occupation and how did you first get into it?
I’m a headhunter. I actually started as a lawyer, and then I went to legal recruitment, and now I’m here. My career switch was very gradual, and actually a bit accidental. I was approached by a friend who asked me if I was interested in recruiting lawyers, so I started from there and I never changed industries.

What’s the most enjoyment you get from headhunting?
I think it would have to be helping people find their dream jobs.

The career switch you’ve made is quite an unconventional one. What’s one thing you’ve learnt in this journey of yours?
Don’t compete with other people. Don’t look at what other people are doing, but look at what you’re doing and then just keep at it.

A part of me used to think, “What are my friends from law school doing right now? And what am I doing right now?”, and then sometimes I feel a bit emotionally imbalanced. But after a while I realised, it doesn’t really matter what they do and what I do, as long as I just do what’s on my path.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to job-seekers right now?
Don’t go and chase what you think you like. Just do what’s in front of you and do it to the best of your ability, and then things will follow. Because I think you will grow to like what you’re good at. That’s my biggest advice.

Let’s talk about fashion then. You have a certain dress code at work, but what do you usually wear outside of work?
A bit more casual, no jackets (laughs). Polo shirts, jeans, sneakers, loafers. Nothing too sloppy, but also nothing too over-the-top. I won’t dress for the sake of dressing up because I don’t see the point of it becoming a costume. But at work, I do like to express myself with pocket squares—I have too many of them.
