Fellowship

Have you picked up any new hobbies or tried anything interesting since we last spoke?
I picked up DJing this year, which is something that I’ve always wanted to try since I started making my own music a while back, and it’s been really fun so far!

I also recently did a pop-up booth for two days at The Hammock Market for my store, Upstairs Garments. My partner Vegas and I run it together with two of our friends, and we sell curated archival, vintage, and runway garments. Honestly, we didn’t have much expectations going into the pop-up it. It was mainly for us to head downstairs (because we’re upstairs…garments (laughs)) and have fun.

But we felt really fulfilled because we didn’t expect people to come down just for us, and geek out about clothes with us! We met new and old friends and at the end of both days, and we were so drained but we really felt the genuineness of the fashion community here in Singapore.

We first opened the store because one, we own too many clothes collectively, and two, we really wanted to get to know like-minded individuals who had a passion about the history and stories of the different brands and pieces we know and love today. Even though it was pretty exhausting, we really hope we can potentially host our own pop-up event in the near future and grow our little community here in Singapore!

That’s sounds like so much fun! Having a full-time job, do you then spend your weekends running Upstairs Garments?
Yeah, on the weekends, we’re mainly in our attic planning for future drops, shooting content, hosting customers, etc. Sometimes we’d get sidetracked and start nerding out about fashion and DJing—our store has kind of become our little hideout on the weekends.

Is there something you wanted to achieve this year that you haven’t gotten to just yet?
Some of the things that I’d like to achieve this year is to hopefully get my motorcycle license, finish all my unfinished songs, and start DJing at small events!

P.S. Any rave organisers that are reading this, pls hmu, I can spin techno, house, ambient, and trance.

Your footwear is always on point! What do you look out for when buying new shoes, and which brand/designer is your favourite?
My dad used to collect sneakers years ago, so I guess I naturally picked up a liking for shoes since then. What I learnt from my dad is that the usual things to look out for and consider are comfort, durability, and the number of times I’m actually gonna wear them, but honestly, when I see a pair that I like, I’m most certainly going to get them (laughs).

Asking me to pick my favourite brand/designer is like asking if I like my mum or my dad more (laughs)! But if I had to pick some brands, they would be Chopova Lowena, Rei Kawakubo, Walter Van Beirendonck, and MINJUKIM.

Lastly, if you had the chance to live anywhere else, where would it be?
Vegas and I have always talked about moving out of Singapore. We really wanted to move to Bangkok, but we knew it wouldn’t be the most feasible for us.

Honestly, anywhere is good—if u gave me a rocket, I wouldn’t mind living in space!
