Introduce yourself!
Hi, my name is Balqis. I’m currently in my first year of creative design for fashion in LASALLE College of the Arts.

School has been fun so far! I’ve always had a huge interest in photography, so I’m glad that I’m able to further explore my hobby in this way.

How did you first become interested in design and fashion?
I’ve always gotten high grades for art in both primary and secondary school, though academically, I didn’t do that well (laughs). Anyway, after graduating, I decided to try studying tourism in ITE, but I realised that it wasn’t for me. So I ended up in LASALLE to try out fashion because I’ve always had a huge interest in it growing up.

In fact, my first favourite cartoon was Bratz—I used to be really inspired by their outfits, and even tried to mimic them in my own way!

How would you describe your style now?
I would say minimalistic but also edgy with an aspect of comfort too. For now, my favourite colours to wear are green, black, denim blue, and also a bit of earthy tones like khaki, beige, and white. That said, I’d like to try dressing in new colours by better understanding my personal colour palette and fitting what’s right for my skin tone.

My favourite piece in my wardrobe now is my leather jacket—I love matching it with dresses, skirts, jeans, and basically anything that I feel has a good fit overall.

Who would you say is your style icon?
Erykah Badu! I like that she experiments with her style and also puts her music into what she wears, which is very interesting.

How do you spend your weekends?
Usually I like to go to cafés or museums with my friends, snap a couple of pictures, and enjoy our time together. Some nights, I go partying. The last party I went to was called Hyperfocus, which happened earlier in August.

I’m also looking forward to hopefully travelling more with my friends. I’ve got my sights set on Europe because I’d like to experience the fashion scene and life there in general.
