Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
I hate cheese, how fun, right?
We heard that you have an interest in photography, how did that start?
I picked up photography when I was in NS. I got too much free time, so I decided to pick up a hobby.
A few years ago, when I was still new to photography, I was out practicing using my camera and I took a shot of a man at a traffic light with an EZ-Link card in between his lips. The photo looked similar to the the famous photo Book in Mouth by American photographer Jeff Mermelstein. But what’s funny about it is that 10 seconds before I took the photo, that man had his pants all the way down to his ankles, and he was fiddling around with his wallet looking for something.
After that, he took out the EZ-Link card, put it in his mouth, and pulled up his pants. All this was happening while he was waiting for the green man at the traffic light. I don’t know why he had to pull his pants all the way down to look for something in his wallet, but some people need to turn down the volume of their music when they park their car, so I guess that’s his thing.
Tell us about your first tattoo!
It’s based off of a painting by Edward Hopper titled Rooms by the Sea. I think if he wasn’t a painter he would be a photographer. This particular painting reminds me of my childhood.
Where’s the last place you went to on holiday?
I went to Taiwan in August this year—I love that country. I went to Alishan, rode the forest railway, and bought a train whistle. It’s my favourite thing I bought on the trip.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
In a boat house or in a fire lookout tower up in the mountains.
What genre of music would best describe yourself?
I wouldn’t define myself with a single music genre. I listen to music based on my mood. During my blunder years (I highly recommend this subreddit by the way), I listened to a lot of metal and progressive rock—bands like Slipknot and Dream Theatre.
When I joined my school band playing the trumpet, I was exposed to concert band and symphony music, so I also gained an appreciation for orchestral music. Whenever I miss being a student, I’ll listen to Jay Chou’s old songs.
Now I mostly listen to instrumental music and bands like Khruangbin. I think music with no lyrics are more open-ended and can be interpreted more freely and fluidly.
