We understand you run a jewellery business, Fujimori Kajita, with your business partner Takashi. Tell us more about how you decided to start working together!
It’s actually a long, funny story!
I worked in advertising for five years before entering the jewellery industry to take over my family’s gemology business. I’ve learned so much since then, and have grown a lot as well.
So Takashi and I both have businesses of our own, but 12 years ago, we decided to booth at a pop-up jewellery/gem show together in Singapore. At the time, we lost a lot of money, but after the show, we decided to visit the Marina Bay Sands casino to try our luck. We bet the rest of the money that we had with us and ended up winning quite a bit! (laughs) We couldn’t believe our luck, so we decided to continue investing in our business, and the rest is history!
Our Fujimori Kajita jewellery has been stocked at Takashimaya for the past five years, then we moved into a small store along Tras Street, and now we’ve just moved into a bigger store along Ann Siang Hill.
If that isn’t fate, we don’t know what is! What are your hopes for the brand as you continue to expand?
We hope to explore other English-speaking markets in Southeast Asia, but as Takashi and I have always discussed and dreamed of, we would love to open a shop in the United States or London and Paris.
If Takashi’s favourite gem is the tourmaline, yours is…
Sapphire! I like the colour of it, and it’s a meaningful gem as well—it symbolises faithfulness and long-term trust.
