Tell us a bit about yourself!
I’m Eliot, and I’m currently a year 1 student studying interior design at LASALLE. Prior to this, I was doing digital arts and animation, so I’m a bit out of my field of study. As for my hobbies, I play the bass guitar in a band.
First things first: why did you pivot to interior design?
I mainly pivoted because I didn’t want to be in the animation and digital art industry, especially in Singapore where it’s not flourishing much and lacking in opportunities. And with the emergence of AI, I feel like the industry is really shrinking, which is why I chose to try something new.
Why interior design specifically?
Back in the animation world, I studied concept arts, which involved a lot of interior conceptualisation and perspective drawings, which is pretty much what we also have to do in interior design. I also have relatives in the field, and I’ve helped them out on projects here and there previously, so this isn’t a completely foreign industry to me.
Next, tell us more about your band!
We’re called Sigma Cats—it’s very casual. All my band mates are in their 30s, so I’m the youngest in the band, and the only Gen Z guy in it!
How did you guys meet?
There’s an online forum where you can find and get matched with band mates, like a dating app but for bands (laughs). So unless you go to bars and socialise often, this forum is the easiest way to find band mates and form a band. You just register the instrument that you play, and the genres that you’re interested in, and people will find you based on who or what they need in their band.
I was in a different band prior to this, but because we were all the same age, we all started university at the same time and are all too busy to keep up with the band now.
So what genre of music does Sigma Cats play?
We mainly play pop and rock, and a little bit of punk rock as well. But we mainly do covers because I really only have time to practice with them once a week.
What’s been on repeat for you lately?
Right now, I’ve been listening to Paramore and Måneskin, which is a Romanian rock band.
Last question: outside of school and your band, how do you enjoy spending your time?
I go to parks to just sit around and do nothing. I love to just sit and stone or eat a sandwich in peace. My favourite parks to visit are the Jurong Lake Gardens and Bishan Park.
