Please introduce yourself.
Hi, my name is Reevan. I’m 22 this year and I’m studying Creative Direction for Fashion in LASALLE College of the Arts.
Cool! How did your interest in fashion begin?
It sounds cliché, but it really did start when I was younger. I was always getting caught cutting up my clothes and making random designs with them. Whenever my mom walked into my room, she’d see scraps of fabric all over the floor and go, “What are you doing again?” And of course, I’d end up wearing whatever I made (laughs).
I was actually in a different course at LASALLE before this—I studied Design Communication but dropped out in Year 2. When I had to finish my diploma, I naturally gravitated towards fashion. Once I got into it, everything just made so much more sense.
However, in my first semester, I wasn’t locked in at all. I honestly couldn’t care less about school—I was skipping class almost every day. But in semester two, everything shifted. I moved into a different class, and my peers had way higher standards. I had to step up, and that really opened my eyes. I’ve always been interested in fashion, so after leaving graphic design, moving into fashion was pretty much a no-brainer.
What made you pursue graphic design first when you could’ve just went into fashion right away?
In ITE, I studied interior design. It was fun, but the work-life balance felt really unstable, and I couldn’t see myself working in that industry long-term. Back then, graphic design felt more like my thing—I wanted to make zines, design logos, and all of that, so I switched to graphic design. In my current course, we still do graphic design, and I think my experience in design communication really helped me get through some of the assignments.
Let’s go back to you cutting up your garments. Were you interested in designing clothes back then as a kid, or more of the branding aspect of things?
I think it was just me being a very young person. I was super inspired by Bethany Mota—she would post all these tutorials, and I’d always try them out. And because I used to follow my sister when she went thrifting, I think that pretty much set me on the path to where I am now.
Adorable! In terms of inspiration, is there a particular brand that you look up to?
Not anyone in specific. My style always changes. Sometimes I dress a little bit more dark. But I think what’s super common in my outfits is that it’s quite boho. I always try to incorporate some element of boho chic into my outfits.
We understand you also do hairdressing on the side. How did you get into that?
It was super random—definitely not on my 2024 bingo list (laughs). I just woke up one day and felt like cutting hair. A lot of my friends were talking about their barbers, and I thought, “I can totally do that too!” So I hit up a close friend who knew someone and just gave it a try. Honestly, it was the people—my colleagues—who really helped me get into it.
So it’s really just a spur of the moment thing—you just woke up one day and decided to do it?
Yeah, but it really put things into perspective for how life can change at any moment!
In terms of your future career, what do you want to pursue?
Career-wise, ever since I decided to go into barbering, I’ve felt like I can pretty much do anything if I really put my heart into it. But if I were to stay in something fashion-related, I think I’d lean more toward the PR side of things. If not, I’d actually love to do social work because the act of being able to help people means a lot to me.
