What have you been up to lately?
I’m just studying and going out to skate, that’s no. Not a lot of things going on.
What are you studying?
Mechanical engineering at ITE.
Ahh, so is skateboarding a means of unwinding for you?
Kind of lah. Later my friends are coming, so it’s nice to meet up with friends and stuff.
When and how did you get into skateboarding?
During circuit breaker. I saw videos of it, then I was like “Not bad” then after that I tried it, and here we are! It was my way of passing time during Covid because back then when you go out, you have to wear a mask, but when you exercise, you don’t have to (laughs).
Valid! So how do you feel when you skateboard?
Honestly it’s calm. It’s like when I meet new people every once in a while, and I land tricks that I want to land, it’s a nice feeling—a sense of accomplishment.
Have you picked up any new tricks lately?
Nothing new lah. I want to learn tricks but nowadays I’m quite lazy (laughs). So I haven’t tried.
Do you have a favourite skater, or one that you look up to?
I like Louie Lopez! His skate style is really nice, very flowy and effortless.
What do you think of the skate scene in Singapore?
I think the community is definitely growing a lot. There’s a lot of younger people skating now, and a lot of new faces lah. And the skate scene in Singapore is honestly very chill lah. Everybody mixes around with everyone, and they don’t care if you’re a girl or a guy, I think this is why a lot of people feel like they belong here. Some people, we don’t fit in on the outside, but here, we accept anyone.
That’s really nice to hear! One last question: if you could ride for a pro team, which would it be?
Honestly, Vans. I’ve been skating Vans for a long time.
