Hui Xuan is rarely seen without her signature sneakers, and in a colour palette of black, white, or blue. “I have a minimalist style,” she says. “When it comes to workwear, I believe in dressing smartly, yet comfortably.” Hui Xuan has been interning for about a month and a half, and says that she loves the fashion element of her work, and so far, she hasn’t had any problems balancing her work and personal life. “I think it’s important to find a job that you really love so that you can commit to it,” she says. “And you should spend the time that you have on weekends wisely.” Hui Xuan’s spends her weekends going for a swim, or the occasional full-day food trail that sees her and her friends visiting a span of different cafés and eating their hearts out. Beyond food, another thing Hui Xuan loves is traveling. “If I could, I would love to travel all around, and document the process,” she says. “You should enjoy life to the fullest.” Perhaps it’s fitting that Hui Xuan’s favourite book is one that delves deep into an unfamiliar culture. “It’s called Yakuza Moon: Memoirs of a Gangster’s Daughter, by Shōko Tendō. It’s a true story that unveils Tokyo’s underworld of drugs, abuse, and tattoos, and how the author stands up to discrimination in such a conservative society,” she says. “It’s an inspiring memoir.”
