Introduce yourself!
I’m Syed and I’m currently in my third year studying Fashion Media and Industry in LASALLE College of the Arts. I’m also interning as a production assistant—helping out on shoots and post-production, which is something I want to continue doing after I graduate. But right now, I’m open to exploring my options.

How has your three years in LASALLE been so far?
It’s pretty fun! I’ve met a bunch of people who I really admire, and they’re my motivation to come to school because sometimes the lectures are pretty… yeah (laughs). We’ve been doing group work together for the last couple of years so we’ve ended up being pretty close. In fact, when I was in the UK for my student exchange, my friends and I would Facetime often so I really didn’t feel that homesick.

After spending some time in the UK, what are your thoughts on Singapore’s fashion scene?
I feel like the people in the UK have different ways of showcasing who they are personality-wise. And because there’s also a bunch of subcultures, they’re not afraid of going all out—you can have guys in stockings, for example.

But in Singapore, if you dress like that, people will stare at you. But I do feel like the fashion culture in Singapore is slowly evolving, and hopefully everyone will get used to expressing themselves uniquely.

Do you have any other hobbies or interests outside of school?
Oh, I don’t really know. I haven’t been out for so long (laughs).

I’m starting to get back into working out, and I have a friend who’s been teaching me how to meditate. I’ve also been reading a bunch as well. Right now, I’m on this book by Rick Rubin called The Creative Act—it’s my third time reading it. I read it whenever I’m experiencing a creative block, and with every read-through, I learn something new.

What else do you do when you’re in a creative rut?
I go for walks, and sometimes I have deep conversations with friends, which I find refreshing. I appreciate being able to hear from them because I feel that sometimes my thoughts are one-sided, so new perspectives help to broaden that.
