DR. MARTENS X SHENTONISTA — Aligned

It’s been quite some time since we last saw Kien (here), but it seems that his sense of style hasn’t changed — he usually tries to add something a bit more sporty to his look to dress it down a little, so despite the navy blazer and brogue-style shoes, his rough-around-the-edges bag helps to balance his look. Read on to find out more about his style, his job, and what he thinks makes a good pair of shoes.

Q1. How do you try to personalise your outfit, or find some way of making it look different from the usual office crowd?

It usually comes across in some form of an accessory that has personal meaning. Sometimes it could be an unexpected colour combination, or some subtle form of detailing on the pieces I’m throwing on.

Q2. We think that little things can make or break an outfit. What do you personally look for when it comes to shoes and accessories?

For me, when it comes to shoes, comfort, first and foremost, and versatility. A pair that has mileage always triumphs over something that’s too seasonal or on-trend for me. I’m beginning to appreciate how some things can stand the test of time. Could be an age thing… (laughs)

Q3. What are some of the items in your wardrobe or on your dresser that you can’t live without?

My dark denim jeans, white Oxford shirts, blue chambray shirts, stone bracelets and trusty sneakers.

Q4. Do you believe in routine or spontaneity, both at work and off work? How so?

I believe in a balance of both. Too much of either won’t be productive, I figure.

Q5. We often hear people say: don’t work hard, work smart. Have you found any way of working differently? (e.g. having a meeting outdoors, on the go? Taking a walk around the building for a bit of inspiration?)

Yes, I think the best and most inspired ideas come to me when I’m talking with creative people in a casual, fun environment.

Q6. Could you tell us about what you’re working on right now, or a personal project that you would love to undertake?

I’m currently working on decorating my new apartment. It’s quite satisfying to see some of my ideas coming alive and hilarious to see how some others only look good in theory.

Q7. What do you do when you’re simply having a terrible day at work? Or how do you personally cope/deal with stress from work?

Good food always helps, otherwise, there’s the gym or online retail therapy.

Q8. What’s the one thing you think you should be doing more of, or that you wish you had more time to be doing?

Travelling, and learning to cook.

Q9. Who is your all-time favourite musician or band? Or the artist that you’re currently into at the moment

I’m currently into Banks, Ed Sheeran, and Ellie Goulding.

Q10. In light of the Dr. Martens #standforsomething campaign, what’s the one thing you stand for? What do you personally believe in, be it at work, or in life?

Be aligned with who you really are!
