Laila is the female force behind independent fashion and lifestyle blog, Rock The Trend, which chronicles fashion news from around the world. Despite being in-the-know, it’s clear that Laila doesn’t take herself or her fashion too seriously, even staunchly rejecting any form of high heels. “I wear sneakers all day, every day, even if I am in a corporate meeting with important people,” she says. “I feel like I age 10 years just by wearing heels.” We find out what else makes her tick.
1. Do you have any fashion pet-peeves when it comes to workwear? Or do you have any advice for dressing up for work?
I would say dress however you like, as long as you don’t blend in with all your co-workers. You don’t need a reason (work? school? party?) to dress up.
2. How did you come to start working in your current industry? Was this something you’ve always wanted to do?
As a kid born in the ‘90s I always knew that I needed to stay current by working with new age media, so I am game for anything online and social. You get to lead the way when you become relevant.
3. If you weren’t working in your current profession, what would you be doing? Or, if you could do anything you wanted to do, what would it be?
I would want to do something with nutrition and food, and come out with a cookbook or a Youtube show.
4. What is one piece of advice you’d give to anyone who’s just starting work? Or a lesson you’ve learnt at your time at work?
Stay humble.
5. What would your dream workplace be like, in terms of the actual physical space and working environment?
Somewhere overlooking the entire city!
6. What is one thing you think you should be doing more of, or that you wish you had more time to do?
Charity work, especially environmental causes. In order to save lives you need to save the earth first.
7. Could you tell us about a personal project that you’re working on right now, or that you would love to undertake?
I started a food instagram (#foodstagram) account with my flatmates called @EatAtHomeLah to inspire people to do more home-cooking which in return, encourages more family time at home. Something that a lot of families don’t do these days — cooking and eating together.
8. Can you name us something Singaporean that’s close to your heart? It could be your favourite local dish, homegrown musician, particular location, etc.
I’m originally from Hong Kong, and I actually really like the weather here. My body has grown to adapt to it, which means I cannot really survive winter.
