Heineken x Shentonista: Moderate Drinkers Wanted — That’s Life
Glenn, Recruiting. Tailored suit, watch from Orient, shoes from Meermin.
This was our second time spotting Glenn in the Raffles Place area, dressed to the nines, as always. While Glenn says there’s no harm in enjoying a good party and drinks once in a while, he’s also equally comfortable with choosing to spend some much needed me-time by himself — whether it’s a quiet dinner alone, like when we found him this evening, or relaxing at home to slow tunes and his tipple of choice. We speak to him to find out more.
Shentonista (S): What’s a regular day at work like for you?
Glenn (G): A lot of calls, speaking and meeting a lot of people. That fills up most of my time.
S: When you go drinking, do you go with your friends or colleagues?
G: It’s usually with my colleagues.
S: Do you do it to relax? Unwind?
G: To me, when you’re drinking with your colleagues, and whether it’s work-related or not, everyone’s always more open. This is compared to actual working hours, where we talk about important things, and where it’s usually more stringent.
S: How often do you go out for drinks after work?
G: It depends on how many times my colleagues ask me to head out, but usually around two times a week.
S: How much do you usually drink? Why?
G: It depends. For example, if it’s on the eve of a public holiday or the weekend, I’d usually drink more. On a normal working day, though, I’ll drink maybe one or two pints.
S: So it’s usually just to relax.
G: Yeah, not to go crazy or anything.
S: How do you know what’s your personal limit?
G: Through experience, if you want my honest answer! (laughs) Some days, I do drink more than what I’d usually drink, but other days I stick to my limit.
S: How do you keep your alcohol intake under control? How do you stop yourself from drinking too much?
G: I usually tell my friends or colleagues that I have to go home because I have to go to work the next day, so that’s how I control it.
S: So are your friends supportive of you, or do they egg you on to stay and drink some more?
G: They’re quite supportive, in terms of that.
S: In our culture where alcohol is easily accessible, do you think it’s important to drink moderately?
G: Yeah, I believe that.
S: What’s your great motivation for drinking moderately?
G: I think, in terms of drinking moderately, everyone has to find their own limit. If I reach a certain point, I go back home. Drinking is a social thing, so as long as you know how to control yourself, and at the end of the day you present yourself well, then it’s okay.
S: So it’s about being respectful of others and yourself, and being accountable.
G: Yeah. At the end of the day, you can’t say that you acted a certain way just because you were drunk or that you drank a lot.
S: What are some of your best tips for lasting the night?
G: Having a full meal, and having enough rest. Enough rest is definitely the most important.
S: Besides going out for drinks, what other activities do you enjoy? Any other hobbies?
G: I try to make up for my drinking with sports like running and cycling, though I don’t go as often as I should!
S: What would you describe your personal style as?
G: Be comfortable with who you are, be presentable, and dress like the person that you want to be. You might not be at the stage of your life that you want to be, right now, but work for it — even if it’s through your dressing.
S: Do you think your style has changed over the years, since you started working until now?
G: Not really, I think it’s been quite consistent.
S: What do you usually look out for when it comes to workwear?
G: It’s the details that matter, like a pocket square, even your shoes and socks. The fit of your clothes matter too.
S: Do you still get most of your clothes tailor-made?
G: Yes, they’re mostly tailor-made.
S: Any advice for someone who started work recently?
G: I would say be open to anything that comes along, and it doesn’t matter what kind of education or background you have. If you want to do well, be open to anything because it’s important to understand things from everyone’s point of view, not just your own. Make sure that you accommodate everyone.
S: What’s your personal go-to when you’re having a stressful day?
G: I listen to music, or stay at home. Just being alone, watching a show, maybe with a nice glass of wine or whiskey.
S: Any personal mottos or philosophies that you’re living by right now?
G: C’est la vie, and to live in the moment.
