Lynette never imagined that she’d be working in advertising, given the “sheer saturation” of ads we see today. But one award-winning ad she chanced upon changed all that. “I thought, wow, that’s genius and disruptive, I’m going to try for advertising.” This sense of spontaneity is applied to her outfits, it seems. “No pet peeves, no rules — anything goes,” she says. “Look at me today, I’m dressed as a salted egg custard bun. People should come dressed as various foods to work. It would add flavour to the office.” Puns aside, Lynette wishes that Singaporeans would draw more from our rich, vibrant heritage. “I’d like to see more Singaporeans weaving ethnic and modern clothing together.” Now that she’s found something she’s passionate about, Lynette does take her work seriously — just not too much. “Be shameless, but humble,” she says. “It’s a difficult combination, but you have to have a thick skin and an open mind. Don’t be afraid to ask hard questions, but truly and earnestly listen to the answers. Then you’d constantly be learning and shaping your journey — Alice in Wonderland-style.” Even off work, Lynette’s constantly learning. “I’m currently learning German but wish I had more time and brain capacity to practise it during or after work.” She also rattles off a list of things she’d like to do, if she wasn’t working here. “I’d probably be working for an non-governmental organisation, or teaching English overseas. I would want to open a bubble tea stall, or a local arts initiative business, or a pizzeria, or a tuition centre for the less privileged kids in Singapore, or just plant a herb garden and be known as the Basil Lady,” she says. “The list is endless!
