You’re a financial consultant. Is this a career path you’ve always wanted to explore?
It definitely wasn’t something I foresaw myself pursuing, especially because I lacked the knowledge and network. Being unconfident and shy certainly made the decision tougher, and it was a huge leap of faith on my part. In fact, I’ve hardly come across any sound person who wakes up one day and decides to be a Financial Consultant (laughs).

That said, as a beneficiary of insurance myself, and the sole breadwinner of my family, I saw the need to step up and provide for the people who matter to me. Besides, getting compensated for giving advice didn’t sound like a bad choice to me at all! So that’s basically how my journey down this path began.

What’s the toughest part about your job?
The beginning is often the toughest—the steep learning curve, daily rejections, and self-doubt are some of the biggest struggles we all face.

Fortunately, these struggles are only temporary. Now, I’ve come to love and enjoy the process; advisory is now a lifestyle to me.

Likewise, what do you enjoy most about it?
I truly appreciate the one-to-one interactions with people from all walks of life. Everyone has a story worth sharing, for these experiences could potentially be another’s lesson, or inspiration to take action. And did I mention that I love the many overseas trips we’re spoilt with, too? (laughs)

One of the most memorable experiences I’ve had in this job would have to be the MDRT Global Conference held last year in Sydney. It was a truly surreal experience meeting industry giants from all around the world. Being there was a reminder that nothing is impossible, and that I can achieve my goals as long as I set my mind on it.

Outside of work, how do you like to spend your free time?
I’m a boringly predictable person, unfortunately. I love singing, playing basketball, having drinks with friends, indulging in scenic views, and staring into space.

What’s a quote or a piece of advice you live by?
It’s one by the award-winning author, John C. Maxwell. He says, “Life is a matter of choices, and every choice you make makes you.”

Growing up, I struggled a lot with my self-confidence. But I’m very thankful for these hardships that have built me to become the person I am today.

If you weren’t in this line of work, what do you think you’d be working as?
Probably a counsellor or something in hospitality. I’ve always loved providing acts of service as they give me the biggest form of satisfaction and fulfilment.
