Tell us about yourself!
Hi, I’m Kenny, and I’m currently working as the head of marketing at an InsurTech startup.
One thing about me is that I’m basic and I super love coffee. It wakes me up and keeps me going every day, but I’m not into coffee culture yet, though it’s something I want to get into.
Another thing—I also dance on the side as a hobby.
What’s your go-to coffee order?
It’s got to be kopi o kosong peng (iced black coffee with no sugar).
Next question: how did you get into dancing?
I first got into dance when I auditioned for the dance co-curricular activity in my junior college. After that, I took a hiatus when I served my National Service, but I’ve since gotten back into it, and it’s now a core part of my identity outside of work.
What kind of dance do you do?
I’m very much experimental, and I’d say I do everything, from hip-hop to house to open choreography.
My genre isn’t something that’s fixed. It’s structured, but I also do freestyle. This has been an alternative creative outlet for me for quite a while now.
Do you feel like dance genres are all starting to become intertwined?
Sort of, yes. It’s not so rigid anymore, I would say, though some people in the scene still think that styles should stay distinct and separate for cultural reasons.
I fully respect this point of view, but to me, the mixing of different styles and flavours of movement is what leads to a lot of new, exciting combinations that we see in the dance scene nowadays.
Agreed—we love seeing new combinations of styles pop up now and then! So as a dancer, we’re sure you listen to a lot of music.
Oh yeah, I do listen to a whole bunch of music, but I think what scratches my brain most right now are oldies—anything funky from the ’80s to the ’90s.
Who was the top artist on your Spotify last year then?
I’m ashamed, but it’s Chris Brown. He’s been my top artist for a while now, and I think it might be a dancer thing, but a lot of us will look at our Spotify Wrapped at the end of the year and be like “Wait, I don’t remember listening to that artist.” But suddenly he’s my number one!
Hey, we love a classic Chris Brown tune too, so no shame in that! Last question: if you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
I’d like to have dinner with my paternal grandpa. We were close when I was much younger, but he passed away when I was 9 or 10 years old, so I didn’t really get the chance to know him on a deeper level, adult to adult.
