Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m a global studies student and I recently graduated! I’m currently seeking employment, so if there are any potential employers out there… (laughs)
Congrats! Can you explain what global studies is about and what kind of jobs you’re looking for?
I used to struggle with answering this question (laughs), until a friend gave me a solid response that I’ve since borrowed. Now I half-jokingly tell people that we basically learn everything and nothing at the same time. But If I had to give a more politically correct answer, I’d say it’s a multidisciplinary major that examines how global issues like climate change, inequality, and migration are interconnected across borders, yet impact different communities in unique ways. At the same time, we’re encouraged to approach these challenges from a local perspective.
Personally, I hope to work in sustainability, ideally in roles that combine community engagement, environmental justice, or corporate responsibility. For me, the big question is: how can we design solutions that are not just environmentally sound, but also socially inclusive and culturally sensitive?
That’s where I think my major really makes a difference as it offers a “glocal” perspective. Sustainability isn’t one-size-fits-all, and understanding local contexts is key to creating lasting, meaningful change, especially in a globalised world.
Interesting! Apart from graduating, how has 2025 been for you so far?
It’s definitely been a fulfilling and fun ride. It feels like I’m finally wrapping up another chapter. Although there’s some uncertainty ahead, which is a little scary, I’m also really excited for what’s to come!
What’s one hobby that you’ve picked up this year?
Lately, I’ve gotten into floristry after watching TikToks about it, and making bouquets for the people I care about is slowly becoming one of my love languages!
You seem like a very bubbly person! What are 3 things that make you happy?
Spending time with my loved ones (furbabies included), running, and being by the ocean.
What does your perfect weekend look like?
Starting the day with a morning run along the beach with friends, catching the sunrise together. Then it’s off for brunch and bubble tea, followed by a relaxing, free-and-easy afternoon spent with my family.
Thats sounds lovely! Do you have any guilty pleasures?
It’s either a bakmie from Kulon or ice cream from Swensens—I can’t pick between the two!
Final question, what does being a hijabi mean to you?
I see being a hijabi as empowering and anything but limiting. It’s a way for me to reclaim my identity—to define who I am on my own terms in a world that often tries to dictate what a woman should look or be like.
There’s a quote by Khabib Nurmagomedov that really resonates with me: “Non-Muslims don’t read the Quran, and they don’t read the Hadith—they read you.” I try to carry that with me in how I live and present myself.
Of course, there are days when it’s challenging, especially with all the misconceptions and assumptions about my faith. But I believe there’s strength in choosing to be intentional about how we show up, especially when others try to define us.
