Little Roots
Tell us about what you do for work.
I’m a kindergarten Mandarin teacher. I chose to work with children because I absolutely love them!
Tell us more about where you’re from. What spurred your move to Singapore and how long have you been here?
I moved to Singapore from China almost 10 years ago as a young adult searching for a fun experience, and I’ve not left since! (laughs)
I really like it here—the air is clean and the people are good. And since I’ve gotten used to living here, I doubt I’ll be moving back anytime soon.
What do you love most about teaching children?
I just love being around them! My favourite moments are when they call me “Mum” (laughs). Even though they’re so young, we’re like good friends, and I’m so happy when I’m with them.
Outside of work, what do you like to do?
In my free time, I like to visit art exhibitions. I really enjoy seeing art in person, especially more abstract ones.
Apart from that, I like to give myself ample rest since working in the education industry is extremely tough. At times I feel particularly stressed out or during the school holidays, I take the chance to travel outside the country for a while to recuperate before coming back. I mostly travel around neighbouring countries, but my favourite place to visit is Japan.
Oh, and I love spending time with my cat too!
What do you miss most about home?
I definitely miss my mother’s cooking the most. I last visited home two years back, so I’m making plans to return again this year.
