That’s a nice bicycle you’ve got. Are you an avid cyclist?
I’ve actually just come from my graduation show at Lasalle College of the Arts and I’m making my way home now.
I haven’t been cycling as much as I’d like to since I started school but now that I’ve graduated, I’m hoping to cycle more often.
Tell us about your field of study. Is this something you want to pursue in the future?
I studied Design Communication at Lasalle and my interest is in photography. For my Final Year Project, I worked with the local magazine FEMALE Singapore to produce a documentary covering local talents and their impacts on Singapore.
As for my career, I’ll have to serve the country first, but I hope to continue freelance photography after even though it’s not a very stable career path for me yet. If I can’t get enough gigs, then maybe I’ll find a job at a production house.
How would you describe your photography style and where do you draw your inspiration from?
I love working with motion and space, but I’ve just started out as a photographer so I don’t want to tie myself down to a fixed style just yet. For now, I’m just working on getting the fundamentals down.
I’ve also noticed that I gravitate towards dark photos and it’s getting a bit dull, so I’d like to step out of my comfort zone and bring more colours into my works too.
I get my inspiration from everywhere, including magazines and photography books. The most recent book I bought is called I Love Fast Cars by Craig McDean. My favourite place to browse photo books is Basheer Graphic Books at Bras Basah Complex. But since they’re expensive, I only buy them if I really love the photographer.
What camera do you shoot with?
Nikon D850. It’s my first camera, a hand-me-down by my mentor. I can’t afford to get one now so this works fine.
Now that you’ve graduated, how are you planning to spend your free time?
I’m always behind the camera, so I’ll still be doing photography for local brands and personal projects. I’ll be shooting for Pedro in a few weeks, it’s my first freelance job after graduating.
Besides that, I like to go out with my girlfriend on long walks at the beach or stay in to watch movies and read.
Why do you wear your watch inverted?
This is how I’ve always worn my watch, I know people who wear it like this in the military too. Maybe when I enlist in the army, I can still tell the time when I hold a gun—that sounds cool (laughs).
