Introduce yourself!
I’m Maisur, and I’m currently waiting to start my first year in university at the National University of Singapore (NUS). I’ll be studying sociology, but I’m also planning to minor in something else that I have yet to decide on.

Why sociology?
I studied Pure Geography in secondary school, then H2 Geography junior college, so I’ve always been interested in the human side of things—learning about societies, what shapes our cultures and things like that.

But to be very honest, I also picked Sociology because I have nothing better to study in uni lah (laughs). Most of us have grown up with the idea that you need a degree to at least go further in life, and that’s what my parents believe too, so here I am.

How are you spending your time before school starts?
I’ll be travelling to Australia and Japan, but I’m most looking forward to visiting Japan. I’m learning Japanese right now, but it’s a slow process because it’s so hard for me as a non-Chinese speaker. All the Kanji and the pronunciation is so weird to me!

What are you most looking forward to with school starting soon?
Making new friends! I mean, I do have a close group of friends right now, and I definitely love them, but it’s always nice to meet new people and see how people are living different lives, and going through different experiences.

How about life after school? Have you given any thought to what you’d like to pursue in the future?
Before I completed my National Service (NS), I actually thought of signing on with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). The pay was good, and the hands-on work was something that I liked, plus saving people is kind of noble (laughs). But after a while, I found shift work too tiring, so I gave that idea up.

Now, I’m leaning towards the creative industry, but I’ve heard the pay isn’t great, so we’ll see how it goes.
