Introduce yourself!
My name is Zamien, and I’m currently studying computer engineering at Temasek Polytechnic! I’ve been busy with project work lately, but I’m trying to dip my toes into drawing and art. It’s been less than a year, and I usually draw cakes and food. It started with looking at pretty cakes; I wanted to give them the proper recognition that they deserve. They’re so pretty that it makes me want to do something with them!
So, what’s your favourite cake to draw?
Strawberry shortcake!
And to eat?
Also strawberry shortcake! (laughs)
What keeps you busy when you’re not at school?
I’ve been interested in being a barista, so I’ve been going to more cafés lately. While visiting them, I also take photos of their cakes and then go home to draw them. My favourite order right now is a matcha latte… with a strawberry shortcake!
How dyo you channel yourself through your style?
I find myself often reppin’ the same outfits because I don’t have that many ‘fits to choose from. But that forces you to mix and match, and you can find a lot of new styles by doing that. My friends also made me want to get piercings, so I just got them done recently!
What else have you been working on lately?
I’m not much of an explorer, unless there are art events that I’m interested in. I try to support those because I think the local art scene is important.
For one of my school projects, I’ve been looking at how queer and minority businesses are struggling in Singapore. I think most Singaporeans kinda know that these businesses are suffering, but we just don’t do enough to care. I think being more careful with how we purchase items and understanding our intentions is really important — which is something that I’m still working on myself.
