The Rice Bucket

Oh look at that cute tourist from Japan! The loose, multiple layers, the stripes, the backpack, the iconic Bao Bao by Issey Miyake extra bag, the high-cut sneakers and straw hat – she looks like a college student here on an exchange programme. Except she’s not – Shu is all Singaporean, but her quirky style can, in part, be attributed to her being quite the passionate Japanophile (having studied there for one year). The endearing pixie cites Japanese maestros such as Miharayasuhiro, Miyazaki Hayao (and Studio Ghibli) as some of her influences and even her favourite food is aligned with her passion. “I really like rice and all its derivatives – porridge, congee, mochi etc. I’m quite the rice bucket,” she confesses. Junk food is another weakness. “It’s as though my body wants to ingest as much evil as possible before I embark on a clean-eating regimen – which is most likely never happening,” she sighs. When asked who she’d like to dine with, she excitedly names iconic New York street style photographer, Bill Cunningham. “He’s such a cute old man and he’s so dedicated and committed to his job. I find that very inspiring.” Let’s hope Mr Cunningham likes rice and junk food too. Shu was previously spotted here.
