Introduce yourself and tell us one thing most people might not know about you.
My name is Evan. I’m 18, from Indonesia, and I’ve just moved to Singapore for my studies. One thing people might not know about me is that I want to be a musician!
How’s that going for you?
A lot of ups and downs for sure. I formed my band last year, but it’s been difficult managing schedules, finding time to meet, and even just writing songs and music. But hopefully 2025 will be the year we take off!
Did you form your band here in Singapore?
Yes! The story was that I was just searching online, which wasn’t a very good tactic because I had just moved here and knew nobody at all, but I managed to meet my current bandmates on two separate music forums. We weren’t all that active last year because of scheduling issues, but we’ve stuck together and are hoping we can actually start thriving this year.
All the best! What type of music are you guys hoping to create?
We haven’t decided because there are so many genres we’d like to take on, so maybe a bit of everything to start? My writing is all over the place right now as well, but I’m definitely inspired by a lot of alternative, progressive, and math rock, with a bit of an electronic element as well.
So we take it you’re the main writer/composer in the band?
I’m the rhythm guitarist, and yes, I also help write our songs.
I’ve been playing the guitar since I was really young, and honestly, I only picked it up because I thought it was cool, not because I was super passionate about it or whatever. So it was a very surface-level type of interest, and there were many times where I gave up on it, but when I picked it up again for the fourth time, I actually started to enjoy it. It was also when I started watching live performances of bands like the Smashing Pumpkins—they’re my favourite band! Since then, I was like “Oh, shoot, I actually want to make music!”.
When I moved to Singapore, I also started going for gigs, which gave me further confirmation that this is in fact what I want to pursue.
Do you have any favourite local bands?
I really love Blush. When I first watched them, I wasn’t really expecting anything, but after their gig, something in me changed. It was their gig at Phil’s Studio before they embarked on their US tour. I remember crowdsurfing then (laughs). It was really fun!
What else do you enjoy outside of music?
Outside of music, I really love fashion. I might not actually want to pursue it, but I love indulging in it and studying different brands, learning about their ethos and the way they construct their garments.
And if you ask me, fashion and music are very much interconnected. For instance, runway shows are very much inspired by music, and like fashion, music also has many different subcultures.
A brand that I’m loving right now is Ann Demeulemeester. As a designer, she’s very inspired by Patti Smith, which explains the whole androgynous, dark aesthetic to the brand. I also really love Number (N)ine, a Japanese brand by Takahiro Miyashita that’s inspired by Nirvana.
