Sandals have gotten a bad rep in the past, especially those of the light rubber-soled, Velcro-on variety, or the ones with wide leather straps, more commonly found on the feet of function-driven uncles. But even those have been coming back in trend of late, and after the resurgence in popularity of slip-ons like Birkenstocks—once deemed to be a fashion faux pas—we’re not even surprised anymore. And really, what’s not to like? These sandals are evidently practical for both our heat and the regular rain, and we like the effect they create: looking at someone, from his face, to his outfit, and finally to his feet, a pair of hardy sandals is sometimes an unexpected, yet welcome surprise.
