Childhood pastime:
Growing up on a farm in South Africa, far away from big cities, you had to keep yourself entertained. But being one of four siblings there was never a dull moment. Playing in the fields and crops, swimming in rivers, fishing, horse riding, bicycling on gravel roads, trying to raise wild animals as pets, etc. We were pretty much left to our imagination, but I wouldn’t trade those years for anything.

I work as a photographer on a cruise ship.
I wanted to travel and see the world before I get too serious in life. I also like capturing people’s memories and seeing that they’re really happy about the photograph. We just docked so I have one day to see Singapore before heading back to South Africa.

Anything interesting stories from the ship?
There’re some really nice experiences, like swimming with whale sharks, wild dolphins, turtles etc. Also there are all those people you meet, and become such good friends with. Having to say goodbye after six months is really sad as you don’t know if you’ll be able to see them people again.

People don’t know this, but…
They think I’m brave to leave everything behind to go work and travel alone to foreign countries. But in reality I’m more scared of getting stuck in the comfort of everything familiar and having to face issues I’m not ready to yet. So it feels more like I’m running away than towards something.
