Down To Earth
Featuring
Joey
Graphic Designer
Have you always wanted to be a Graphic Designer?
Yes. I was always the “art kid” growing up and I studied graphic design in school, so it felt only natural to get into this industry after graduation.
What do you enjoy most about art?
I’ve built my community around the industry, so I really enjoy seeing everyone’s uniqueness and different aesthetics coming together.
How did you go about discovering your personal style?
For me, I develop my style by referencing Pinterest.
Even for my fashion style which is more earth-toned, I have Pinterest boards for different eras from the 70s to the 2000s.
Share with us your favourite art event you’ve been to recently.
Cut Copy Paste, a zine fair that was held at my alma mater, Temasek Polytechnic, earlier this year. It was more than just an art event for me as I also got to meet my former lecturers and peers, like a reunion of sorts.
What’s the best memory you have from school?
I guess the thrill of last-minute trips to the printing shop and rushing to meet submission deadlines. There was also a special bridge at my school that my friends and I would spend hours at together. If you’re a fellow Temasek Polytechnic alumni, you might know what I mean (laughs)!
What do you do when you face a creative block?
I play Minecraft on the Nintendo Switch—it’s my creative outlet away from creative work. I also like playing Super Smash Bros. with my friends, although we get pretty competitive!
Outside of work, what do you like to do?
I do enjoy the occasional party once in awhile, like Emo Night or events at Chye Seng Huat Hardware. I used to have nights out way more often, but now that I’m starting to make a living for myself, I’ve realised that I can’t afford that anymore (laughs). But when I’m not partying, I’m usually chilling at a friend’s house.
