Introduce yourself!
My name is Jade, I’m 22 years old, and I’m currently a software engineer intern in the GovTech sector.

Cool! Did you just get off work? We love what you’re wearing!
Yeah the boss let us off a bit earlier so I wanted to take the chance to head to the library to borrow a couple of books.

Oh, what books are you looking to borrow?
One of them is called Klarra and the Sun. It’s a recommendation from a friend who’s really into books. The other one is called The Three-Body Problem—I’ve heard it’s really good!

Ooh, so you’re a sci-fi fan, we see. Would you say this interest has influenced your personal style?
Well, it might have! In terms of my personal style, it’s quite muted colours-wise. I usually just go for all black, so I’ll usually be seen in an all black outfit or maybe some pale blue. I also tend to go for striking silhouettes that are really recognisable instead of colour, so you can probably recognise me from a mile away because of the shapes that my outfits tend to have.

We see you also accent with silver.
Ahh, yes! I really like silver a lot. It complements the black really well because it shines. A lot of my outfits are very matte in terms of reflectivity, so it makes my metal accents pop a lot.

Any particular reason for the asymmetry in your accessorising?
That’s a really good question (laughs). I think I just prefer to wear my earrings on the right. I know some people might say it’s a cultural thing, but to me, it’s purely personal preference. Sometimes I actually do double up and wear a total of four, but most of the time when I’m just in a casual, non-special occasion, I would just wear two.

Yeah, you do you! We also see some hints of green in your accessories. Is this a nod to your name?
Kind of, yeah! My name is Jade and I like the colour green (laughs), so I base my identity and fashion style around the values of jade in the Chinese culture. I like to embody that with my fashion. For example, jade represents tranquility, harmony, and subtle grounded power, so I tend to take inspiration from these qualities and put them into my outfits and character.

We love that! When and how did you get into all of this and fashion in general?
Well, I got tired of looking bad when I was in polytechnic. For context, I did computer engineering in poly, and you know how engineering students always dress in the same casual way? I just thought that there has to be something more that I could be doing for my own personal style instead of showing up for lectures in sweatpants and t-shirts all day, so I decided to experiment and tried a whole bunch of stuff, like colours and silhouettes and all. Some of it worked, and some of it didn’t. The outfit I’m in now is kind of a combination of what has worked and stuck over the years.
