Where are you from and what brings you to Singapore?
I’m from India, just outside of Delhi. I’ve come to Singapore for a week with my girlfriend, Vatsala, who’s here to attend a conference. It’s my first time in Singapore and it’s been good so far, it’s a beautiful city.

Tell us about your field of study.
I’m doing a PhD in Analytical Chemistry. My research is in the application of quantum dot solar cells to convert solar energy into electricity—think Elon Musk’s Tesla cars that run without diesel or petrol. I have about a year to go before I graduate and my goal is to work in a sustainable industry outside of academia.

How long have you been with Vatsala and what’s your favourite thing about her?
We met in school and we’ve been together for about 10 years. I really admire her honesty and loyalty. Vatsala was actually the one who inspired me to further my studies as she’s also in the same field.

Outside of school, what do you enjoy doing?
Back in India, I enjoy partying and hanging out with my friends. Vatsala and I also like to explore our country and travel abroad too.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Working in Singapore, actually. This trip has converted me, and the North Indian food—my favourite—in Little India is pretty authentic too!
