Introduce yourself!
Hi, I’m Hanisah. I graduated with a diploma in fashion design from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts about two years ago, and then I took on a pottery internship. Now, I teach pottery on the side while working at Takara House as a retail assistant.
Cool! Why did you choose to switch from fashion to pottery?
Honestly, I never saw myself pursuing fashion. It was a bit of an impulse decision because I just wanted to explore something different. I like to paint and draw as well, and I just want to explore different art mediums.
What then would you say was your biggest takeaway from fashion school?
I learnt a lot about design principles and all those kinds of things, but I would say I didn’t take much away from it apart from the fact that the industry is really not a good fit for me (laughs).
Well, at least you know what you don’t wanna do! Why pottery then?
I happened to see a random internship listing and didn’t know what to do with myself, so I thought I’d sign up and learn something new.
What’s your favourite piece that you’ve created?
I love making cups! Especially ones with intricate handles. I haven’t explored much in terms of my own work, but my favourite piece I’ve made… I would say is a cup (laughs).
Is pottery something you hope to pursue in the long-run?
Yeah, I’m hoping to continue on with pottery. I sew on the side and make bags and upcycle old clothes, but I don’t really have a fixed dream if you ask me. I just want to do whatever!
What would you say is your motto in life then?
It’s a bit cringey… but YOLO! I’m very introverted actually and I think I’m quite awkward, but I’d say I’m also quite easygoing and don’t care much for what happens. So in life, I just want to work on what I already know and define my art style a bit more, find something to focus on.
