Jayne works with multi-label footwear stores Leftfoot and P.V.S., and says that her jobs basically entails pretty much everything to do with the stores and brands: from dealing with the buying and sourcing of brands and collections, right down to responding to customers’ enquiries. “I would say my job is pretty interesting because every day is a different set of challenges. I don’t really have a routine that I stick to, as my job scope is pretty broad.” Despite her workload, Jayne is currently working on her new house and has been watching everything come together with much excitement. We steal a few moments of her time as she shares about her beauty experiences, as well as what she’s learnt from work.
1. What is the craziest/adventurous makeup look you have ever tried?
I’m not very adventurous with make-up actually because that means if I make a mistake (I usually do since I’m quite clumsy), I’d have to remove it all and start all over again, which I dread and have no patience for. So far, the “craziest” look, which is probably not even that crazy, was me trying to channel Amy Winehouse for a party. The make-up was horrendous but hey, it was on purpose! I even used my eyeliner to draw tattoos on my arm just to make it more believable.
2. How have your look and brow shape evolved over the years?
Yeah definitely. I used to have really thin brows because it was the ‘in’ thing back then hahaha. But I grew it out and with the help of Browhaus, I got a pair of eyebrows that suited my face. I feel that having a good pair of eyebrows is very important as it helps to frame your face.
3. What do you think is important for women to be well-groomed, and why?
Definitely! I think it’s more than just looking neat and groomed. I feel that it boosts your self-esteem and gives you the confidence when you have to meet clients etc. And I don’t think it’s only important for women to be well-groomed, I think it is just as important for men!
4. If you could only pick 1 type of make up must-have, what would it be and why?
Sunblock! You may not be able to see the benefits of sunblock immediately but it is so important to my skin! Other than keeping me fair, it protects my skin from harmful UV rays that can cause cancer.
5. What is your idea of the CBD and Shenton Way? Do you think a corporate mindset and creativity can go hand in hand?
I used to think the CBD and Shenton Way were very “structured” and “strict”. I could never imagine myself working there but as time progressed, things changed and mindsets became more open. Now, I feel that you need to be creative to keep up with the corporate world, because it’s not what I think it used to be.
6. What are some items in your wardrobe/on your dresser that you can’t live without?
I cannot live without my shorts because Singapore is just too hot! I have a ton of jeans at home but I rarely wear them because of the weather, so I end up cutting some of them to make them short to get the best out of it (laughs). As for on my dresser, I can’t live without perfumes. I feel that having a scent is just as important as any other accessory on your body; in fact, I think it is even more important. People can pick up your scent even if they don’t see you, and more often than not, they start creating their impressions of you based on your scent!
7. What’s the one thing you think you should be doing more of, or that you wish you had more time to be doing?
I wish I had more time to spend with my parents. After being married, it feels a little odd to go home without seeing my mum and dad, since it has been that case for the past 25 years. Even though we are on the same island, I still miss them and make it a point to at least talk to them for a while every day.
8. What is important for you to have at work, both in a material and emotional/psychological sense?
Material-wise, it’s always important to have a notebook and a pen to jot down notes. I have a terrible memory and always need to write down stuff just in case it slips my mind. In terms of emotional/psychological, I feel it’s always good to have a never-say-die attitude. It may be difficult but it really helps when there are days that you just feel horrible at work, for example, if you’re not hitting your quotas or have a difficult boss. Just persevere and make the best out of the situation! It helps me a lot!
