The striped breton shirt was first instituted by the French navy as the standard uniform for its seamen in Brittany, and the original design featured 21 stripes, one for each of Napoleon’s victories. The striking navy-and-white stripes made it easy to spot in the waves, and so the design became the working garment of choice of men of the sea.
