"I’d say my style is comfortable and timeless, with a touch of Japanese accents. I like to visit Japan every year during spring or summer and that’s where I collect my outfits for the year, so I don’t shop for clothes much in Singapore.”

“After my grandfather passed away, I went through a rough time. Soon after, I encountered a moth with a broken wing, and found out that it symbolises the spirits of ancestors returning to check on their family. I got a moth tattooed on my forearm as a reminder that my grandfather is still watching over me.”

“I moved to Singapore from Ipoh, Malaysia to take on a job in Videography and Editing because of the currency. Apart from that, I also wanted to try working overseas and since there isn’t much cultural difference between both countries, Singapore became an obvious choice for me.”

We first spotted Clarisse, a freelance illustrator from Indonesia, across the street, glowing in her vibrant pink outfit in the light of day, sipping on her iced coffee with her dad by her side as they strolled around, seemingly unbothered by the midday heat, in search of a good spot for lunch.

“When you’re interested in something, be it math or art, the innate passion to explore is exactly the same. As a math and science educator, I see so much beauty in even geometric shapes and numbers, although my students will tell you otherwise!”

“I used to dress very minimally when I first started working in the corporate world; I’d go as far as colour-coordinating and that’s it. But when I was working from home during the pandemic, I rediscovered the ways I liked to dress as a kid, with bright colours and bold styles, and really stepped out of my comfort zone. Now, I’ll even wear a cowboy hat if I want to!”

“My interest in art and fashion began with watching Winx Club when I was young—the art style and costume design inspired me to start drawing. When I visited Japan in 2018, the different clothing styles I saw in Harajuku further piqued my interest.”

“Moving into my first home across the border was a huge learning process. I would’ve done many things differently in hindsight, but I’m so thankful to now have a place to call my own. I also love hosting loved ones, especially those in Singapore who now have a place to stay when they come over to Malaysia!”

“My love for musical theatre started from movie adaptations of musicals. I was also exposed to lesser known classics in my school band and found a deep appreciation for orchestral music. To me, musicals are the full package of performative arts. There’s singing, dancing, acting, live instrumentals—what more can I ask for?”

“I underestimated myself quite a lot in my 20s. Looking back, I was as capable then as I am now, so I should have taken more risks lah. Now, in my 30s, I’m telling myself, if I feel nervous about something, don’t care, just do it.”

“I like to journal, and I sit down every week to pen down reflections. I reflect on many things, like my dreams, my goals, my achievements both big and small, and especially the mistakes that I make in my daily life. I write them down so that I’ll remember them for the rest of my life, and not make the same mistakes twice.”

“I currently run a home-based stuffed brownie business, which I started back in 2019, because in school, we need laptops, so I started selling brownies to raise funds for a MacBook. Later on, baking really grew on me, and it’s since become my passion.”
